Hyderabad: The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish a campus in Hyderabad, becoming the first foreign university to receive an LOI to set up a campus in Telangana, according to an announcement.

The US public university plans to welcome its first cohort of students at the Hyderabad campus in August 2027, subject to completion of the regulatory process and approval of proposed programmes.

CU Denver said the Hyderabad campus will initially offer programmes in areas including business, computing, engineering and analytics, with a focus on applied learning and career readiness.

The university said additional programmes will be proposed to the UGC for approval from the second year onwards.

Kenneth T. Christensen, chancellor of CU Denver, said the Hyderabad campus would build on the university’s longstanding connection with Indian students and extend its academic and career-focused offerings to students in India.

CU Denver’s India campus will be established with Emeritus as its strategic joint venture partner. Emeritus will support the university’s establishment and growth in India, including non-academic functions.

Ashwin Damera, co-founder and CEO of Emeritus, said the proposed campus would bring globally relevant education closer to Indian students and connect academic learning with workforce requirements.

CU Denver said the Hyderabad campus is aligned with the priorities of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, including multidisciplinary education, internationalisation, learner outcomes and career readiness.

Established in 1973 and governed by the University of Colorado Board of Regents, CU Denver has around 14,000 students and more than 100,000 alumni across over 100 countries. The university is classified as an R1 research institution by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.

The university said it will continue to work through the regulatory process and engage with academic and industry stakeholders as it develops the Hyderabad campus, with the first cohort targeted for August 2027.
