Division bench directs inspection and immediate repairs after reports of students attending classes in dilapidated buildings

Ranchi: Jharkhand high court on Tuesday said no compromise would be tolerated with the safety and education of children, taking serious note of the dilapidated condition of govt school buildings and teacher shortages.

A division bench of Chief Justice M S Sonak and Justice Manoj Prasad was hearing a suo motu PIL on the state of govt schools. The court directed the govt to ensure that officials inspect schools, assess repair and modernisation requirements, and complete the work immediately.

The bench observed that several schools were functioning with only one teacher, while students were being forced to attend classes in unsafe buildings amid fears of structural collapse. It said the govt and officials concerned had a moral responsibility to provide children with a safe and secure environment for education.

The court initiated the PIL after taking cognisance of reports on the poor condition of Ranchi’s zila school. The matter will be heard again on Nov 5.
