IIT Kanpur has partnered with the Gates Foundation to advance the development of locally designed, affordable diagnostic technologies, with a focus on improving access to healthcare solutions for underserved communities.

The partnership was announced at the third edition of IIT Kanpur’s Samanvay industry-academia summit, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on October 16. The initiative aims to bring together expertise in engineering, biotechnology and artificial intelligence to explore diagnostic solutions that could be developed and deployed in India and other countries in the Global South.

Archna Vyas, India country director at the Gates Foundation, said India’s scientific talent, engineering capabilities and manufacturing ecosystem could help expand access to affordable health technologies.

“Our partnership with IIT Kanpur brings together engineering, biotechnology and artificial intelligence to explore faster, more accessible diagnostics for underserved communities,” Vyas said.

IIT Kanpur director Prof. Manindra Agrawal said the collaboration reflected the institute’s focus on translating research into practical solutions, particularly in healthcare.

The announcement comes amid efforts by higher education and research institutions to strengthen links between laboratory research, industry and the development of technologies with real-world applications.

However, the announcement did not specify which diseases or diagnostic applications the collaboration would target, the research teams involved, the financial commitment from either partner or the timeline for developing and deploying diagnostic solutions.

The Samanvay summit also featured discussions on emerging technologies, healthcare innovation and the role of research in addressing societal challenges. A technology showcase brought together 21 exhibitors working across areas including artificial intelligence, medical technology, aerospace, sustainable energy and precision agriculture.
